The Way I View Friendship | CM Monthly Project

May 2nd, 2012

Sometimes, living here in the desert, I have an aching for movement and change.  Well, honestly, I mostly have that desire when summer hits.  It’s hit here – 90 is a GREAT temp…so much better than 100! – and I do feel the urge.  All kinds of places look good to me – Seattle, Portland, Denver…

Of course, picking up and moving one’s family isn’t quite so simple.  And, so, I am afforded the opportunity to explore the depths of my desires.  My attraction to change (and willingness to run from this heat).  Inevitably, when I start digging I come up against one road block – our friends.  Sure, we have friends in all of the above places.  But our friends here?  Oh, dear.  We would MISS them.  West would miss them.

West wakes daily asking to see a run-on list of friends (including moms and dads).  We all know how sad we’d be without our support network and, after 6 years in this desert, I finally feel like we have one.  We have friends who can count on us and who we can count on.  I think it takes a while – a 5 years kind of while – to really start to feel rooted in a place.  These days, everything snowballs.  I meet new friends weekly who I really think we could enjoy spending time with on a regular basis.

Since I have backed off of dragging my camera with me everywhere I don’t have a ton of images for you this month but I do have some that, to me, really scream friendship.  Miss Roslyn is one of West’s best friends.  I can’t remember what got them so dirty this night but after dinner we brought them outside and stuck them in the wagon for an outside tubby. They were splashing about and having fun and I was snapping photos on my phone to upload to instagram.

Then I had a moment.  I gasped, “oh – what am I doing with my phone? – I need to go get my CAMERA!”  Ha!

No beautiful setup (imagine this scene in a lovely field at sunset!), nothing planned.  Just two friends having a good ‘ole time :)

I caught the happy virus last night

When I was out singing beneath the stars.

It is remarkably contagious -

So kiss me.

The Way I View Happiness | Clickin Moms monthly project

April 2nd, 2012

Oh gosh March slipped away from me!  I took these photos earlier in the month and set them aside – I KNEW they were what I wanted to use for this mont’s theme of happiness.  No long-winded musings this month.  I think these images pretty much speak for themselves.

You see, these too sweet kiddos, well, they make one another so HAPPY.  They are such a pure example of how relationships – friendships – are what bring us joy.  Not things.  Experiences and time well spent (together).

Snow in the desert is a rare thing, so we took these monkeys up Mt. Lemmon to play in it after a storm in March.  They enjoyed themselves greatly (as you can see)!

The Angle Family | Tucson Family Photographer

March 21st, 2012

I first met Stacy and Chad many years ago on a hike we embarked on with Stacy’s sister, Kim and her husband.  No one on the hike had enough water (Except Dylan and I!  We had enough!) and I ended up with unbelievable blisters on my heals.  6 years later the first thing Chad said to me (after hello) was – “I remember those huge blisters you got on our hike…”  :)

Time passed and they had twin boys.  They came early.  Very early.  The boys were so small.  Their family’s life held so much stress for so long…I can not imagine how I would deal with it.  Yet, look at this family.  They are shining!  Love is radiating from them!

The boys, Finn and Sully, are now almost 4 and spunky as any boys could be.  We had a great time playing at the park – West too.  They were super sweet and kind with the “little guy” and West ate up all their interaction.

Thank you, Stacy, Chad, Finn and Sully, for a fun visit!

For those wondering, this was a mini-session.  That means it was short – only 20-ish minutes of shooting. These sessions are a great way to capture some family images without committing to a full session.

10/52: Monochrome

March 12th, 2012

I was delighted when the theme for this week was Monochrome! I love black and white images!

For this image I brought West back to the window location where I shot the first image in this set. We brought out one of his play silks and a bunch of hats, etc. In this image we were playing peek-a-boo with the play silk.  (no, my 2.5 yr old does not just sit and smile for the camera…). :)

A different time of day, plus it was overcast out, meant quite different camera settings.

I also bounced external flash off of the window (camera right).

The Best Camera… | Tucson Lifestyle Photographer

March 8th, 2012

The best camera you can use to capture your child?  It’s whatever camera is closest to you.  In your hands.

I do not carry my professional camera around with me day and night.  It’s heavy, I worry about losing or breaking it (yep, I’m a bit of a worrier).  Also, West is in a phase where he really doesn’t respond well to that camera.  He almost runs and hides when it comes out.  At the very least he is difficult and begins to do the opposite of whatever I had the mind to capture in that moment.

BUT.  The camera on my phone?  The medium resolution but super-crappy lens camera that I carry around with me all day anyway?  He’s a ham for it!  Plus, it is always with me!

I have sooooo many pictures of West on my phone.  What parent doesn’t, right?  Here’s the good news.  You can print those photos.  You can.  Not at an 8×10 size, but you can print them out small (okay, tiny by photographer standards).

You also don’t need to have an iPhone to take good photos with your camera.  I have an Android right now and I use an app called Retro Camera.  My profile photo on facebook is another phone camera shot with this app.  It is one of my favorite photos of West from this time in our lives because of the action and playfulness it captures.  (Um, yes, I’d love to have an iPhone.  I am a little jealous of all you instagramming folks…but I’m rockin’ what I got right now ;) ).

The first images I have of West after he was born were taken with my crappy Blackberry Pearl, for goodness sakes.  You can bet your pants I printed those out!  Yes, of course I wish I had that beautiful, classic image of me bringing him to the breast for the first time…the emotion in my eyes.  I wish that, but I wouldn’t have traded how present my husband was and how together we were as a new family in those first few hours.  Not for anything.

SO, here are some quick images from yesterday.  We started the day a tad rough so we did what often heals our bumps – we painted.  I started by putting paint blobs in plastic bags so he could squish them around (good idea, Theresa!).  My boy, though, he just wanted to open the bags.  I guess that’s what I get for teaching him how to do that a while back ;)

I cut tiny holes in the corners of the bags and let him squish the contents out.  He squished and squished and painted and painted.  West doesn’t usually enjoy having his hands all covered in paint but yesterday was different.  I had to stop him from painting things in the house (like the dishwasher).  Oy.  It was a good way to start off the morning, though.

Had I gotten out the “big camera,” I’m sure he would have closed down.  As it was he just played and played.  My sweet, painting boy.

Take some photos of your child today.  6 months from now, you’ll be glad you did!  When you are ready to have a professional session done with lots of images to swoon over…give me a call :)
